U.S. Electoral Nerves Wobble the Stock Market.

Election mood: Following Donald Trump's victory in the 2024 U.S. presidential election, the stock market experienced significant movements:

  • Major Indices Surge: The Dow Jones Industrial Average soared by over 1,300 points (approximately 3.2%), the S&P 500 increased by 2.1%, and the Nasdaq Composite rose by 2.4%.

  • Sector Highlights:

Financials: Bank stocks led the rally, with the financial sector climbing 5.5%, driven by expectations of deregulation and tax cuts.

Technology: Tech giants like Tesla saw substantial gains, with shares rising 12%, anticipating favorable policies under the new administration.

Cryptocurrencies: Bitcoin reached a record high above $75,000, reflecting optimism about potential supportive measures for digital currencies.

  • Bond Market Reaction: U.S. Treasury yields increased, with the 10-year yield surpassing 4.4%, indicating investor expectations of higher inflation and increased government borrowing

  • Currency Movements: The U.S. dollar strengthened against major currencies, reflecting confidence in the U.S. economy's prospects under the new administration.

These market reactions suggest investor optimism about potential pro-growth policies, including tax reductions and deregulation, anticipated during Trump's upcoming term.

The UK has a Brand New AI Safety Plan

The UK government said it would legislate their version of AI safety within a year. It is also planning an AI Safety Institute to monitor future developments. Imagine a watchdog that keeps misbehaving robots in check.

Why This is Important to Watch Out For: The aforementioned step could set an example for other nations on AI regulation. With everything changing quicker than last year’s memes, it’s important to have guardrails to protect consumers.

OpenAI's New Robotics Lead

OpenAI hired Caitlin Kalinowski, a Meta executive, to lead its robotics and consumer hardware. Kalinowski had been the head of AR glasses hardware.

Why It Matters: OpenAI is moving beyond the computer into the physical world of robots. Imagine having consumer devices with AI in them that can help you interact with your world differently. Cool, no? It includes smart homes, personal robots, and other tech experiences that make sci-fi feel ordinary.

Amazon’s Robot Procession

Amazon added new robots to its warehouse that include a smart robot known as Proteus that can move independently and can avoid running into warehouse robots, similar in its mobility to a Roomba.

Why It Matters: If robots work faster and smarter, you can get your deliveries quicker and Amazon’s human employees must do less work. But it doesn't stop at shopping itself; it gives insight into how automated solutions are changing jobs and logisitcs.

Renewable Energy Boom for AI’s Power Needs?

The head of Abu Dhabi’s Adnoc Sultan al-Jaber says energy AI is fuelling big oil investment in renewables. The use of renewable energy sources to power large-scale AI data centres could enable them to cut down on their energy diet and operate sustainably.

The tech sector isn’t the only one affected by the new AI boom but the energy sector as well. Investing in green energy by Big Oil? We’re totally here for that plot twist.

AI Tool of The Week

Hailuoai.video is an AI video generator that came out of nowhere and became popular on social media due to its realism and modeling of real world motion. Prompt:  a scared bat being comforted by a black girl with silver hair
